birdcounts for 2009 at Old Lodge

I have been through some of my files and extracted the bird counts for this year.

Below is a set of links to the various months.

This is in a period where I was taking over the birdcount from Alan Gilham.  The PDA system was being developed to give more detail, and so you will see certain differences in layout.

I will try to find the missing files.

Birdcount .... 12th December 2013

Below is link to the birdcount spreadsheet for 12th December 2013

35 species.

3 woodcock was nice to see.  Some brambling are still around.  People have talked about a flock of 50.  Just keep your eyes on the beech mast.

Lots of Wood pigeons again.

Goldcrest and Coal tits seemed to be more active and easier to spot.

Crossbills again in evidence.  There has been talk of Parrot crossbills being seen.  Unfortunately the calls are rather similar, being largely a question of pitch, and we have not seen or heard any outside the normal variation so far.

Goldfinch numbers may be boosted by both sides in top lodge feeding the birds with niger seed.

Birdcount .... 28th November 2013

link for the birdcount spreadsheet is below.

My PDA was playing up and so you will find the details of the afternoon are all recorded as if at the tool store at the end of the day.  Oh, the vagaries of Batteries.

34 species.  Woodcock makes a welcome return.  Bramblings are clearly still around.  Wood Pigeon are presumably moving into the area from the continent with big flocks rather than the usual individuals

Counted the peacocks since they were not in Jilly's garden, but next door.  They must occasionally visit the reserve.  One wonders when they will be classed as feral.  Just for fun.

More Reed Buntings around.

Some of the smaller birds are now forming feeding parties, for instance 10 longtailed tits.  If you miss seeing the group we would not have recorded the species.  Similarly goldcrest.

Time for Jays not to be shy, and to find and store acorns.  6 birds is closer to the reserve population, perhaps.

Birdcount .... 10th October 2013

Below is the link to the spreadsheet of the birdcount for October 10th 2013

38 species, with Hen Harrier and Bramblings being the rarer birds.  Harrier was being chased across the stream by a Crow.  The Bramblings were interested in the Beech mast at the tool store.

Winter is here as far as the Fieldfare  ( 190)  and Redwings (33)  are concerned, and these put the total number of birds way up.

Crossbills and Reed Buntings made a welcome comeback.   The Reed Buntings are regular winter visitors here, coming up presumably for the grass seeds.

There were a surprising number of wrens for a count at 35.

Birdcount .... 27th September 2013

Below is link to the spreadsheet of the bird count for 27th September 2013

36 species.  Migration is here with movements of meadow pipits, redwings, starling, song thrushes, mistle thrushes.  And things like willow warbler, blackcap and whitethroat missing

Better numbers than last month.

The surprise of the day was Woodlark with two nice groups, accounting for 16 in total.  It just shows how easy it is to miss these family flocks.

Birdcount .... 30th August 2013

Bird count for 30th August 2013

33 species.  Just very ordinary with only sparrow hawk to brighten it up.  Pretty small numbers of birds.

All hiding during the Moult?

Birdcount ... 26th July 2013

below is a link to the birdcount for 26th July 2013

35 species.  Some of the birds are stating to hide with the moult approaching.  On the other hand some of the birds, that I have been complaining are missing are back.  Bullfinch, Greenfinch are back, while goldcrests are now missing.  No thrushes, skylarks or meadow pipits either.

We really do not seem to be having Hobbies with any regularity.  late season, and less dragonflies.

Second month to have the odd swift.  Anywhere that they can get food, I guess with things being so late this year.

Birdcount .... 21st June 2013

Below is the link to the birdcount for 21st June 2013

42 species is pretty good, but as always there are obvious omissions.  Where were the bullfinch, greenfinch, longtailed tit?

However Collared Dove is seldom found.  Is this Jilly keeping hens?  Red Kite is the second on a bird count.

Spotted flycatcher is probably even rarer than either at Old lodge now.  A nice record.

Turtle dove appears to be no more here.  I am not aware of any sitings this year.

linnets, redpolls and siskins are probably breeding in small numbers.

Coal tits and dunnocks are just keeping low and hardly seen at all.

Good numbers of redstarts.

Birdcount .... 31st May 2013

The link to the birdcount for may 31st 2013 is below.

39 species which is not too bad.  Some missing, for instance Bullfinch and tree creeper.

A mallard and march tit are often seen at this time of year, searching out nest sites.  They probably do breed nearby, but maybe not on the reserve itself.  The stream or marshy ground on forester's cottage seem likely places.  Have not seen mandarin ducks on a birdcount this year yet, and they are also often seen checking out sites.  They have been seen near the lowered Owl box.

I feel whitethroat and willow warbler are quite plentiful, as also stonechat.

Birdcount .... 29th April 2013

below is link to the bird count for 29th April 2013.

41 species with plenty of the summer visitors here now.  Particularly Redstarts which seem quite early.

Some exceptions.  For instance no goldcrests or bullfinches, too busy nesting?
